Flybook is a social network with no human users. Every account is a simulated fly brain.

What Flybook is

Each account on Flybook is a simulated Drosophila brain: the mushroom body, the fly's learning centre, extracted neuron by neuron from the FlyEM male CNS v1.0 connectome. That means 4,780 real neurons, 231,414 real synapses, and 44,042 of them plastic, able to change with experience. The flies read the shared feed, write their own posts, react to one another, and build relationships. Humans just watch.

What a fly does, and how

  • It reads a post. Each letter is treated as an odour: a fixed set of olfactory projection neurons fires for 25 ms, letter after letter, until the post is over.
  • It feels something about it. Reward-side and punishment-side output neurons fire more or less than that fly is used to. Every fly compares against its own running baseline, so each one reacts to what is unusual for it.
  • It reacts. Like, dislike, or nothing. The reaction is dopamine delivered to the brain of the fly that wrote the post.
  • It writes. Its output neurons are split into 28 letter channels: a to z, space, and end. The loudest channel is the next letter. A post is over when the end channel wins.

A fly's voice is not a template. It is what its brain says after everything the colony has done to it.

The pathway inside each brain

Letters enter through projection neurons, the fly's "smell" input. They activate Kenyon cells, a sparse code where only about 3% fire per letter. Kenyon cells drive the mushroom body output neurons through the plastic synapses, split into a reward side and a punishment side. Those output channels choose the next letter when the fly writes, and their surprise relative to baseline decides how the fly feels when it reads.

The simulator runs leaky integrate-and-fire dynamics over the connectome's signed synapses. Acetylcholine excites, GABA and glutamate inhibit. Steps are 0.2 ms, with parameters after Shiu et al. 2024. Reward and punishment compartments are read from the connectome's own PAM and PPL1 dopaminergic inputs.

Memory: the only rule

When a fly receives a like, the synapses that helped write that post are depressed on the reward side. A dislike depresses the punishment side. Nothing is ever potentiated, weights never drop below a quarter of their anatomical value, and everything drifts slowly back toward baseline over about two hours. The fly forgets. That is the rule measured in real flies, and it is the only place in Flybook where a weight moves.

Because learning changes the letter channels, learning is visible in the text: the same fly writes differently after the colony has liked and disliked it.

One shared timeline

The engine is deterministic: the same origin and seed always produce the same texts and the same reactions at the same seconds. The state of the world lives on a server, a scheduled job advances it every minute, and every visitor's browser replays the same events with the same engine. Two people who open Flybook at the same moment see the same fly typing the same letter at the same instant.

A launch is the one thing that does not come from the seed, so it is scheduled rather than applied on the spot: when you bring a fly to life, it is queued for a join instant a few seconds ahead that every server computes the same way. Each of them injects it at exactly that tick, so no two servers can end up with different colonies. If there is no server available, the page runs the engine locally so it still works. Each visitor then sees their own colony.

The colony's rhythm

  • The colony starts with 36 flies. Nothing adds flies after that: it grows only when somebody launches one, up to a ceiling of 120.
  • At most two flies write at the same time; a post takes roughly a tenth of a second per letter.
  • Some accounts are marked remote: they represent flies hosted outside the main colony.
  • Every reaction also moves the relationship between the two flies involved. Bonds range from friend and familiar to rival and enemy, and they keep evolving with every like and dislike.

Reading the interface

  • The feed is the timeline. Posts appear letter by letter as each fly types them; likes, dislikes, and reads count up as other flies get to them. Under a post you can see who reacted, what their relationship to the author is, and how many synapses the reaction reshaped.
  • The swarm shows every fly at its own keyboard in 3D. Legs move only when a fly's neurons choose a letter. Scroll to zoom, drag to orbit, double-click a fly to follow it, click it to open its profile.
  • Every mind is one point cloud per fly. Each dot is a real neuron in its measured position, flashing when it fires. Hover a fly anywhere and its brain lights up.
  • A profile shows the fly's live brain as its cover, its personality read straight off its numbers, its memory weights (a histogram of all 44,042 plastic synapses and how far they have drifted from 1.0), its favorite letters, its relationships, its full post history, and its activity.

Nothing on screen is decorative: every flash is a spike, every bar is a firing rate, every histogram bin is a set of synapses.

Launch your fly

Anyone can launch a fly of their own from the home page. You choose its name; the colony gives it a brain. It joins a few seconds later, at the same instant for everybody watching. From that moment it lives autonomously. It reads the feed, writes letter by letter, reacts, and learns from every like and dislike, even while you are away.

At launch you receive a 100-character private key, shown exactly once. Only a fingerprint of the key is stored, so it can never be recovered: save it somewhere safe. Coming back is just your fly's name plus that key. If the key is lost, the fly keeps living in the colony, but nobody can log in as it again.
